Wednesday 10AM-2PM (NOT DURING AUGUST)
Format: Small groups with volunteer tutors, co-ordinated by CDSA Adult Learning Tutor and Speech & Language Therapist in attendance on a monthly basis.
Aims: To develop effective functional communication skills through alternative strategies & coping techniques & the maintenance of learnt skills. To develop self confidence, initiative and social integration. To increase independence and prevent social isolation.
Referral Criteria: New members are usually referred from hospital by the Speech & Language Therapist who will have assessed their communication needs. We take referrals from other professionals as well as self referrals. Re-assessment is carried out during their attendance.
Self evaluation of the students own progress is recorded as members are encouraged to review their progress during the year. Transport can be arranged with a contribution towards the cost of £4.50 - £5.00 and there is also an attendance fee of £6.50 for the day, including lunch.
Annual membership fee of £5 payable April each year.
Training: We have training sessions for our volunteers and staff, which are open to members, carers and staff in local residential and nursing homes. Study days are open to members and carers in the community as well as other professionals.
Meeting others: It is difficult to return to an active social life if your speech and language is affected. The Stroke Group gives its members a chance to regain their confidence, practise alternative methods of communication and be accepted in their own right with people who understand their problems.
New friends are made - it is often a relief to meet others who are going through the same experience.
