REHABILITATION AFTER STROKE

THURSDAY 10.00AM - 3.30PM

Format: Group activities, co-ordinated by 4 staff & 2 volunteers. This group is designed for wheelchair users.

Aims: To improve mobility, co-ordination, communication skills and provide mental stimulation. The above aims are achieved in many cases by relearning/developing numeracy & literacy skills, gentle exercise, quizzes, physical games to enhavce co-ordination & other activities.

Referral Criteria: New members are referred from hospital or the community. Assessment of need is carried out by the Stroke Family Support Advisor and/or the Stroke Group Co-ordinator.

Transport can be arranged with a contribution towards the cost of £3.00 - £3.50 and there is an attendance fee of £5.00 for the day, including lunch. Annual membership fee of £5 payable April each year.

Training: Training sessions are organised for staff at regular intervals, incorporating Manual Handling techniques, Food Hygiene, Stroke Awareness etc.

Meeting others: Stroke Group members on a Thursday have usually been discharged medically, as being at the end of their treatment. However, the Thursday session enables many members to move forward, regain confidence after discharge and can indeed improve physical mobility in many cases and provide continued mental stimulus for most members.
